Republic Proclamation Day is an important holiday in Brazil, celebrated on November 15 each year. It marks the day in 1889 when Brazil began its uneasy transformation, becoming a democracy and the United States of Brazil instead of a royal power as the former Brazilian Empire.
The main events took place in Rio de Janeiro and were, by definition, a military coup led by marshal Deodoro da Fonseca. He managed the process without hostilities and eventually became president.
